Clan Shenachie

Let me introduce you to Roy McGilvray

Roy is the self-appointed McGillivray clan 'Shenachie'. In the Scottish language, this was the recorder and reciter of family history, genealogy, traditions, etc.

Roy says, " If anyone knows more about our clan's families I'll gladly give up the title. :-)"

Here is a link to his website.
A Clan McGilvray / McGillivray Information Site

Rather than trying to explain what Roy has found, and is sharing freely, here is an excerpt from his website.

"For over 20 years, almost full-time, I've gathered data on every
McGilvray / McGillivray (plus the other 30 spelling variations;
McG for short) from everywhere in the world. I've concentrated
on the pre-1880 period as most people should be able to trace
themselves back at least to their grd-parents. As well, the 1880/81
censuses have been indexed on a (W'n) world-wide basis which
should provide a base point for locating your family. Of course,
if you're having problems getting back that far contact me for
help. Be sure and contact all your relatives first so you don't
duplicate what's been done.
I've been to Scotland on at least 20 research trips. I've also done
research in London and some other English archives, and in Ireland,
NZ, most Cdn provinces and a few States. I was a volunteer librarian
at the local Mormons for a few years and know most of their
resources and procedures. I've hired researchers and can advise you
on how to best use them. I've written and self-published a number
of books including an index of all the McG names found in the
common sources, and a history of 'McGilvray of Pennyghael' in
Mull. So, I know a fair amount about our family.
And, if I can't help you,Roy wants to connect  I know others who might.
My knowledge and the data I have collected are available free. All
I ask is that you tell me your pre-1880 family history so I can add
it to my files. I'd also like to know about any mistakes I've made.
And, I'd like to add your name to that file so that any relative who
inquires can note your interest and contact you. I'm amazed at the
increased 'connections' that have come about with email. The
'web' is expanding genealogy tremendously."

Now I want to warn you, Roy's website is not like all the user-friendly, graphic-loaded sites we are used to on the internet. Most of the pages are an index to what Roy has collected. Roy has so very much information there is no way it all can be put on one website, by one person. READ the info he has posted. LEARN what Roy has to offer. And then ASK. Really, ASK! It's worth it. Send Roy an email and tell him what you can about your family, even just a greatgrandfathers/mothers name. He will respond with everything he has on your specific line. Ask him anything; he probably has a great answer! I enjoyed the conversation I had with Roy and expect to continue talking with him as I continue our family research.

Roy wants to help all McGillivrays find their ancestry and also to connect all the McGillivray lines pre-1880.  We sincerely want to document all the current and living McGillivrays. We can record and document and keep you anonymous on the blog if you would like.

Thank you again Janice McGillivray for your input on your family line.

The McGillivrays sure were prolific!!!

Who, Me?

My husband called me stubborn yesterday!

It isn't the first time but it is rare. I didn't want to wait for him to find the time to do some small thing that I could do myself and really wanted done yesterday. So when he 'caught' me, I was almost done and he just shook his head and said "Don't ever call me the stubborn one."

We have a 'traditional' style of marriage, he wearing the pants and
me barefoot and......no LOL, just playing in the kitchen preserving food or in the garden. The ‘conflict’ above was something hubby felt was ‘man’s work’. LOL

I like to think of myself as a person that 'goes with the flow'. I am very happy to be the follower or wallflower, at least as long as there is a competent leader. Saying that, I have found myself volunteering for more than one leadership type position - when competancy was in question. And I'm pretty easygoing when it comes to " What do you want to....", because I am very flexible and easy going. I really like most everything so I really don't need to be the decision maker and I prefer to let others do that…unless, of course, I question the competency!

Depending on what you believe, there are a few ideas out there that just might point out natural stubborn traits I should have. ;)

I am the oldest child in my family by 7 years, but I don’t have control issues! I am a Taurus, traits of the Bull include stubbornness. Not me. I am of Scottish and Irish descent; even have the fair coloring but you won’t see any fierceness from me.

Could I be??  Am I, maybe, just a little bit STUBBORN?   NO, not me,....unless, well maybe......but only when I question competency!!!

AS LONG AS COMPETENCY IS DEFINED AS WHAT I WANT, WHEN I WANT!!!    <grin>

Just to be clear, my husband is not incompetant. He is very competent, mechanically-inclined, skilled carpenter, and overall great handyman, besides my great love for him. But when I have gone to the store, or government building, or most anywhere and have been inundated by incompetency, my uh.....cough, cough. ....stubbornness......might rise up and show its face!

Celebrations [Photos]

The 4th of July
America's Independence Day
  A day of celebration!

Most everyone I know likes to celebrate this American national holiday with family and the outdoors. Picnics and gatherings galore. Here are some pictures of children and families playing, picnicking, and enjoying the outdoors. The pictures are mainly from 1940ish to 1990's. All of the pictures are of descendants of
ALEXANDER McGILLIVRAY
son of John and Mary Jane (Hudson) McGillivray,
with some close friends, some of which became relatives!

Independence Day

We would like to acknowledge the current news of Independence from the European Union by Scotland and other countries.  There is much discussion about how this leaves Scotland in a precarious situation.

This is not a political blog, mostly because we can't begin to understand all the facets that affect every political situation. There are many others willing to convince you of one side or other.

As America celebrates their Independence from England, some 240 years ago, we McGillivrays who are not residing in Scotland but (still) feel as if Scotland is our homeland, wish the best to our homeland country.

Wedding Anniversaries

HAPPY WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
to my
Uncle Joe and Aunt Kathy McGillivray

Here is an excerpt from a post by Kathy.

"One Week From TODAY, Joe & I Will Celebrate Our 45th Wedding Anniversary. BUT we Met in January 45 & 1/2 yrs ago. Had an Odd Dating situation. A Date was set up, then I had to cancel because someone I had seen before meeting came by, SO I SET JOE UP WITH A NEW GIRL IN MY BARRACKS. SHE WAS DEFINITELY WEIRD I SOON REALIZED. ANYWAY, I WAS SITTING IN THE C.Q AREA WHEN THEY CAME IN ONE NIGHT, JOE & I TALKED AND BEFORE YOU KNEW IT, WE BEGAN GOING OUT, AND THAT'S PART OF STORY. HE ALREADY KNEW HOW HE FELT ABOUT ME AFTER A FEW DATES, AND GAVE ME AN ADVANCED NOTICE HE WAS GOING TO ASK ME TO MARRY HIM IN A MONTH, WHICH WAS FEBRUARY. WHEN HE DID, I SAID, I NEEDED TO THINK ABOUT IT. BUT I WAS JOKING AND ALREADY FELT WE WERE TO BE. AND I ACCEPTED AND THAT DAY WAS VALENTINES DAY. HE MADE ME LAUGH...AND HE STILL MAKES ME LAUGH"

and
Happy Anniversary to my Husband

After 37 years, and all the curve balls thrown in life's game, we have a stronger and somehow more amazing relationship than I ever knew was possible. He is always making me laugh, surprising me, and providing safety, security, care, and help. Plus he is a great cook! Love you hun.

Books About McGillivrays

Books for reading about our McGillivray Clan.

Alexander McGillivray, the last King of Creeks
This book is made available free in  digital format through the webpage of Electric Scotland.com. (The link above takes you straight to the pdf file of the book, in its entirety. It may take a few minutes to load.) The title page shows it was published in 1903, but I couldn't find an author's name. Many books have been published since on this subject , which I haven't yet read, but I found this book to be a fascinating read.

Clan McGillivray by Robert McGillivray
This book was recommended by Patricia MacGillivray in a post on Facebook group Clan McGillivray. Patricia posted "There is more than one branch of the MacGillivray clan. Some of them come from the western islands and the other branch come from near Inverness. There is a book about Clan MacGillivray by Robert McGillivray which gives the history of the various branches. If you want to research your ancestors in Scotland the website scotlandspeople.gov.uk is a reliable source as this is the genealogy site of the scottish records office.”  Try your library to find a copy of this book.

Clan Macgillivray
Website for Clan McGillivray International. A simple click on LINKS (without using dropdown menu) will get you this list of McGillivray information. The entire website is worth reading with information from basic to country-specific groups and the latest news on the plans for a new clan chief.

If you know of any additional books, please let us know!!
